He was the leader of the National Sahrawi Unity Party before he pledged allegiance to Hassan II shortly before the Green march. Now he is the Mayor of the City of Laayoune and has been appointed recently by the king as head of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs. He is trying to impose autonomy that Rabat says it would bring back Western Sahara within Morocco.
