U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Welch, said, here Thursday, that his country hopes for continuing the political process to find a solution to the Sahara dispute.

It is an ongoing political process and it is important that this process goes as far as possible through contacts, said the U.S. official during a meeting with the press on the sidelines of his visit to Spain.

Welch, who held talks with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, also noted the important role of Spain in the fight against international terrorism in the Maghreb region.

Describing the threat of Al Qaeda in the Maghreb region as very real, the U.S. official called for greater regional coordination to confront this threat.

The threat posed by the presence of Al Qaeda in the region is important, dangerous and could increase, he said.

Welch said that Spain could play an important role in the fight against terrorism because of its good relations with the Maghreb countries.
