Speaking at a conference on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Mexico, Rmiki noted that Morocco is Mexico’s second trade partner in Africa and that trade exchanges are constantly increasing even if they remain below the level of the excellent political bounds existing between the two countries.
These trade exchanges which presently amount to $ 180 mln are showing a deficit for Mexico, he said, stressing the need to promote contacts between small and medium-seized companies which play a dynamic role in the economies of the two countries.
The diplomat who also recalled Morocco's support to Mexico's candidacy to sit at the UN security council as a non-permanent member during the 2009-2010 period said that Mexico will “thus have the opportunity to back the ongoing negotiation process in order to achieve an agreeable solution to the Sahara dispute”.
This “ agreeable solution” will fall within the framework of the initiative, introduced by Morocco in April 2007, and which is designed to grant an autonomy status to the Sahara under the kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, he said adding that “ the Moroccan proposal was endorsed by various friendly and sisterly countries and by the international community at large”.
Recalling that in its latest resolutions (1754, 1783 and 1813), the Security Council described the Moroccan proposal to achieve a political permanent solution to the Sahara dispute as “ serious and credible”, Rmiki noted that the content and provisions of these resolutions are more directly and more clearly in favor of the Moroccan initiative.
The Diplomat also recalled that the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly have confirmed that the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara region is at the origin of the momentum created to end the deadlock and achieve a permanent settlement to this regional dispute. In this regards, Rmiki recalled the conclusions of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General, Peter Van Walsum, deeming the Sahara independence an unrealistic and unachievable option.
Morocco and Mexico established diplomatic relations on October 31, 1962. these relations were boosted by the visit King Mohammed VI paid to Mexico in November 2004, and the visit of the former president Vicente Fox to Morocco in 2005.
