"The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Major General Abdul Hafiz of Bangladesh as Commander of MINURSO," said Martin Nesirky during a press briefing at the UN Headquarters.

    Major General Abdul Hafiz, who held from 2004 to 2005 the post of Deputy Commander of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), replaces Major General Jingmin Zhao of China, whose functions come to an end on April 10.

    Prior to his appointment, Abdul Hafiz was Major General of Bangladesh Army. He was Chief Liaison Officer of the United Nations Mission in Côte d'Ivoire (MINUCI) from 2003 to 2004.
