Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only compromise solution to the Sahara issue, said Professor Ira William Zartman of the American Johns Hopkins, University calling on the United States and the European Union to play a greater role in helping resolve this regional conflict.

Professor Zartman, who gave a lecture Friday at the prestigious Yale University, said that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only "feasible and practicable" solution to get the Sahara question out of the deadlock.

The United States and the European Union must pay attention to the potential danger posed to the Maghreb region in case the deadlock continues. They also must work to get the Polisario and Algeria to engage in serious negotiations, under the auspices of the United Nations,  he said.

Focusing his speech on the U.S policy in the region, the lecturer also called for a new American vision of the Maghreb.

He stressed, in this regard, the need to develop a common policy with Europe towards the Maghreb, a policy that promotes and encourages the strengthening of cooperation and inter-Maghreb exchanges as well as the integration of the Maghreb economies in order to set up a EU-US-Maghreb Union free trade zone.

Professor Zartman also called for the reopening of land borders between Morocco and Algeria.
