Major Event

We were astonished by the letter addressed on February 26, 2007 by Algerian President Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika to the Polisario Secretary General Mohamed Abdelaziz.

On this occasion, we would like to point out the flagrant contradictions found in the letter:

1) Algerian President addresses Mohamed Abdelaziz, not as Polisario Secretary General but as the president of the so-called “the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (RASD).
2) Algerian President congratulates the so-called Sahrawi diplomacy for the success realized at the international level
3) Algerian President expresses “his unshakable belief in a Maghreban ideal”.

We want to mention in this regard these contradictions which cannot flee observers’ vigilance.

1- Algeria claims a self-determination referendum which would allow Sahrawis decide their own future. However, it is so shocking and saddening to notice that the position expressed in this letter is in outright contradiction with the Algerian demand to the international community.

As we know, there has never been a self determination referendum based upon identification.

How come that Algeria has already known the result which has wished from this referendum?

How come that Algeria, a country which claims its attachment to principles, international legitimacy and law can commit such a blunder?

How come that Algeria can vote in advance on behalf of Sahrawis?

Where has it found this so-called “RASD”? Has this “RASD” resulted from a fair, global, honest and free self-determination?

Has this “RASD” been proclaimed by the United Nations? Is it recognized by the Security Council?

How come that a country which is attached to principles and law, such as Algeria, can commit such a historic error?

Asking for self-determination and knowing its results in advance, are these the principles of Algeria? Is this the respect of the international legality? Is this saying that we are not implicated in the Sahara conflict?

Let’s be serious. We cannot claim that we abide by principles and international legality and violate it at the same time?

2- with regard to the success of the so-called Sahrawi diplomacy, nobody’s fool!

It is mainly the result of the outright schemes of the Algerian diplomacy in favour of its protégé by using all means to achieve this.

In fact, Algeria uses all means without shame to achieve this so-called success.

3- Speaking about “unshakable belief in a Maghreban ideal”, mentioned in the letter of Algerian President, it has allowed us say that this will not contribute to the building of the Maghreb. On the contrary, Algeria’s position has delayed the Maghreb construction for 30 years.

The Maghreb has failed because of Algeria’s position on the Sahara.

The Maghreb has failed because of the blind support of Algeria to less that 20 per cent of Sahrawis who are detained on its own territory. The majority of these Sahrawis are Algerians of Sahrawi origins.

So, Where are principles?

Where are the ideal?

On this occasion, we invite our brotherly and neighbouring  country Algeria, with which we share the present and the future to help the region find a way-out and to sincerely contribute to the settlement of this conflict, by encouraging Polisario leaders to adhere to autonomy project under Moroccan sovereignty.

This is the only solution which can save face of everybody.

The only solution which allows everybody, including Algeria, to honourably get out of this sterile conflict.
