The Vice-president of the socialist group in the French National Assembly, François Loncle, underlined the importance of the Moroccan autonomy initiative pointing out that this initiative clearly shows that Morocco has made a move forward.

Loncle who held talks, here Wednesday, with a delegation of the International Federation for Autonomy in the Sahara (FIAS), said in "such a crucial issue" as the Sahara "all parties must agree and make moves to reach out to each other."

In a statement to MAP following the meeting, the French politician, who is in charge of international issues within the socialist group, highlighted the significance of Morocco's autonomy initiative which came, he said, after the failure of the Baker plan. He also underlined the necessity to open new perspectives to the region.

For his part, the president of FIAS, Mohamed Zitouni, said that this meeting provided an opportunity to make a presentation on the democratic, participative and inclusive approach of Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

He also emphasized that this initiative “paves the way to rapprochement between two pillars of the Maghreb, Morocco and Algeria, and enables them to play a greater role within the Union for the Mediterranean and to take up the challenges of illegal immigration and terrorism.”
