Persistence of tension around the Sahara issue could transform the Maghreb region into base for terrorism.

Mr. El Mami Boussif, member of the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs (CORCAS) and President of the region of Oued Eddahab-Lagouira, warned on Wednesday in New York against the persistence of tension around the artificial problem Sahara that could transform the Maghreb region into base for terrorism.

Mr. Boussif, who was speaking before the 4th Committee of the United Nations, also said he chose to live in his country, Morocco, where he enjoys "full rights of citizenship" since he ensures himself the management of his region with other members of the Regional Council democratically elected.

He added that he chose "to join a construction and unity project when others chose to enroll in a process advocating separatism, destruction and dissemination of a violence and destruction culture".

Having highlighted the "bold statements" by the Personal Envoy of UN Secretary-General for the Sahara that Sahara's independence is impracticable, he stressed that the establishment of autonomy is the appropriate solution because it is the balance that respects Sahrawi characteristics and culture.

This solution, said Boussif guarantees local populations to manage their own affairs in their region within a democratic framework.
