Sahara NGO "Association sahraouie de défense des droits de l'homme" (ASADEDH) has called on Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon to issue an arrest warrant against the current representative of Polisario in Algeria, Brahim Ghali, accused of "genocide and torture" against the Sahrawi people, and who is expected to visit Spain early October.

In a plea addressed to the National Audience, Spain's highest court, the association noted that Brahim Ghali left Spain in a hurry at the beginning of the year to evade prosecution he could be subject to following a complaint filed against him and several other separatist leaders and Algerian leaders.

Shortly after filing the complaint by the victims of Polisario before the National Audience, the leaders of the Polisario relieved Brahim Ghali of his duties as a representative to Spain and appointed him as a delegate in a safe place, namely Algiers.

The ASADEDH called on the Spanish judge to order the arrest of Brahim Ghali as a preventive measure to question him, during a trip he is expected to pay to Spain in October.

Last December, Sahrawis victims of serious human rights violations in Tindouf camps (southwestern Algeria) filed a complaint against Polisario leaders and Algerian officials for "genocide and terrorism".

The Sahrawi victims, backed by ASADEDH, accused many leaders of the Polisario of "genocide, murder, injury, illegal detention, terrorism, torture and disappearances," said their lawyer Jose Manuel Romero Gonzalez.

The former Polisario representative in Spain, Brahim Ghali, and the Ministers of Information and Education of the so-called "SADR" are among the senior separatists sued by their victims.

The list of the prosecuted officials also include Khalil Sidi Mhamed, Minister of the Colonies, Mohamed Khaddad, the current MINURSO coordinator and former director general of the military security, Ali Dabbs, a member of the military security and the current bodyguard of the head of Polisario, Mohamed Abdelaziz.

The list also includes senior officers in the Algerian army. They are accused notably of covering these abuses that took place on the Algerian territory, with the involvement of officials from the Algerian military security.
