"We reckon that it is important to have a new initiative to open dialog" between all the parties concerned, he said following a meeting with Speaker of Moroccan house of Advisors (higher Chamber), Mustapha Oukacha.
Recalling his country's stance over the Sahara issue, Jagland explained that Norway backs UNSC resolutions, either with regard to this issue or Middle East issues.
The Sahara conflict arose in the mid-seventies by the claim of the Algeria-backed "Polisario" separatists to separate the Moroccan southern provinces (Sahara) from Morocco after these provinces were retrieved from Spanish rule under the Madrid accord signed in 1975.
Norwegian MP also stressed that Morocco can be a “model” for the countries of the region in terms of the reforms undertaken, noting that Norway looks forward to establishing good relations with Morocco in all fields.
Morocco plays a “very important role” in the region, especially at the political level, Jagland added, noting that he discussed with his Moroccan peer bilateral relations, and issues concerning the Middle East.
Thorbjorn Jagland arrived in Rabat on Saturday for a five-day official visit. He is scheduled to hold talks with Moroccan top officials.
