Morocco is mulling a proposal to grant large autonomy - under its sovereignty and territorial integrity - to the Sahara to solve the dispute related to these provinces, which the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists lay claim to since the mid-Seventies.
Speaking at a press conference at the end of a meeting with First Secretary of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), Mohamed El Yazghi, Chavez said Spain has called for a fair, lasting and final solution to the Sahara issue within the framework of the United Nations.
Chaves, also Secretary General of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) of Anadalusia, underlined that settling this conflict would consolidate stability in the Maghreb region.
El Yazghi said the autonomy project is in line with the international legality and has received the approval of several international bodies, including the European Union that approves the autonomy principle as the only solution that would avoid instability in the region.
He underlined that contrary to the parties concerned with the Sahara issue, Morocco has a project that “constitutes a final solution that satisfies all parties.”
