Saint Lucia reaffirmed Monday in New York, its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, describing it as a “consensus-based solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.


In an intervention before members of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the representative of Saint Lucia highlighted that this initiative, which the Security Council described as serious and credible in its successive resolutions since 2007, is in line with international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly.
In this context, he called for the resumption of the series of round tables with the same participants: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and “Polisario”, in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2654.

After the diplomat renewed his country's support for a just and acceptable political solution to the parties through dialogue and in accordance with Security Council resolutions, he expressed his country's support for the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura.

In this context, he praised the informal bilateral consultations that Mr. de Mistura conducted last March with Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, as well as his recent visits in September 2023 to Morocco, Algeria and Mauritania.
