Burundi welcomed, in New York, the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco to definitively close the regional dispute over the Sahara, expressing its support for the political process carried out under the aegis exclusive to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

“My delegation strongly supports the ongoing political process, held under the exclusive auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, aimed at achieving a political, realistic, lasting, mutually acceptable and negotiated solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara”, based on the realism and a spirit of compromise, as recommended by the resolutions of the Security Council, since 2007, underlined the permanent representative of Burundi to the UN, Zéphyrin Maniratanga, during the annual meeting of the UN Committee of 24.
He also indicated that the process of the round tables with the four main players: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the “polisario”, should thus lead to an outcome where all the main players would emerge as winners from this regional dispute.

The diplomat commended, in this context, the efforts made by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and welcomed the work accomplished by his personal envoy, in particular his visits to the region as well as the informal bilateral consultations he held in March last in New York with Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and the “polisario”.
