The Central African Republic welcomed, before the UN Committee of 24, the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco for the final closure of the regional dispute over the Sahara.


The representative of the Central African Republic highlighted, during the annual meeting of the 24th Committee held in New York, that his country welcomes the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which is moving in the direction of a settlement based on consensus, describing this plan as serious and credible, in order to “reach a solution to this regional conflict, given dynamism of the international support it enjoys.
He also praised the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who conducted visits and held bilateral consultations with all parties, with the aim of facilitating the resumption of the political process under the exclusive supervision of the UN Secretary-General.

In this context, the representative of the Central African Republic called for the resumption of the round tables, in the same format and with the same participants: Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the “Polisario”, in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2654.

The Spokesman urged the aforementioned countries to continue their commitment, in good faith and in the spirit of compromise necessary throughout the political process, with the aim of reaching a permanent and final solution, under the auspices of the United Nations as stipulated by the Security Council.

On the other hand, the diplomat praised Morocco's full respect for the ceasefire in the Sahara, and called on the rest of the parties to return to the ceasefire, in order to ensure the security and stability of the entire region.

"We persistently urge all parties to cooperate fully, frankly and continuously with MINURSO," he said.

In this regard, the Central African Republic expressed its "deep concern" about the situation of the residents of the Tindouf camps, especially women and children, calling for respect for their basic rights.

The representative of the Central African Republic stressed that it is necessary and urgent to carry out registration and census operations for this population, in accordance with international humanitarian law and in accordance with the mission of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, recommendations of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and relevant Security Council resolutions, in order to preserve dignity of these victims.
