Guatemala reaffirmed, before the members of the UN Committee of 24, its support for the autonomy initiative put forward by Morocco in order to finally end the regional dispute over the Sahara.

Speaking during the 24th annual meeting of the Committee, held in New York, the Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations stressed that the autonomy plan is "a realistic, credible and serious basis for reaching a negotiated solution between the parties, within the framework of respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national sovereignty."
The diplomat also renewed his country's support for the Kingdom's efforts to search for a just and lasting political solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

After noting the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, aimed at helping the concerned parties to find a solution acceptable to all, the Guatemalan diplomat indicated that the settlement of this dispute is necessary to achieve the comprehensive integration of the Maghreb region.
