Major Event

The Arab Lawyers Union (ALU) has urged the parties concerned by the Sahara issue to implement the autonomy project proposed by Morocco in order to settle this matter.

In the recommendations declared publicly, on Saturday evening, in Beirut, at the end of the first session of its permanent bureau held this year, the ALU affirms that the Moroccan initiative has stirred up a large adhesion, particularly from the United Nations and the European Union, but also from the heads of State and government of many countries, members of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (EMCCA), having met last June in Cameroun, who have welcomed this initiative “aiming at breaking the Sahara issue deadlock and finding a political and final solution for this regional conflict which affects the Arab Maghreb Union”.

Having reminded that the Sahara issue « has led to a tension in the relations and the borders’ closure between two Arab sisters countries, namely Morocco and Algeria, despite the historical and brotherly links uniting them”, the Union has drawn the attention of the different parties “to the necessity of implementing the Moroccan autonomy proposal in Sahara”.

The ALU has furthermore considered in its recommendations that « the Moroccan Sahara issue is one of the important matters requiring efforts as well as Arab and international solidarity in order to reach a final settlement as part of the positive initiatives presented in this regard”.

The permanent bureau of the ALU has held, on July 10th and 11th in Beirut, its first session during the year 2008, under the theme “Together for Arab solidarity building, public liberties and human rights support”, with the participation of bar presidents and lawyers from many Arab countries, including Morocco.

The session agenda has focused on the study of many issues, particularly the report of the Union Secretary General about the political situation in the Arab region and the regional and international mutations, the situation in Palestine and Iraq and Doha agreement concerning the Lebanon, in addition to the situation in the Sudan and Somalia.
