The autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco, so as to reach a final settlement for the Sahara issue, has created a new dynamic in the whole Maghreb region, has stated Prof. Abdelhamid El Ouali, on Wednesday evening « It’s a serious project having benefited from the support of big world powers”, has said Prof. El Ouali, who was the guest of the “Question marks”  program broadcasted by ANB TV Channel (based in London).

The researcher, who has recently presented in London, his new work in English “Autonomy in the Sahara. Prelude to the Maghreb of the regions”, has stressed that the autonomy project serves not only the interests of the Maghreb countries but also those of the neighboring countries as well, reminding that the latter have always expressed their wish to see the Maghreb emerging as a unified regional set.

Furthermore, the researcher has emphasized the fact that the international community has been aware that the Sahara issue is not a question of self-determination but definitely a result of an Algerian policy taking all the people of the Maghreb region as hostages.

In this regard, he has condemned what he has qualified as Algeria ‘s “expansionist policy”, while stressing the fact these Algerian aims are useless during this globalization era where world countries try to be unified, with open borders to better face development challenges.

Prof. El Ouali has noted that Algeria’s wish to block the Sahara issue is due to the domestic situation of this country.

Prof. El Ouali, who has held high positions in the United Nations Organization for more than 14 years, has deplored the inhuman conditions in which live Moroccan Sahrawi citizens, held during more than three decades, against their will, in Tindouf camps, on the Algerian territory.

« The embargo imposed on these persons is totally inacceptable on all the legal and moral plans”, he said, qualifying this situation as a “crime”.

The researcher highlighted also the remarkable economic dynamic witnessed in the southern provinces thanks to the major socio-economic projects initiated in the region with the participation of local populations within tranquility and stability as in the other regions of the Kingdom (…)
