The Regional integration of the Maghreb is blocked in large part because of the dispute over the Sahara issue, said Eneko Landaburu, Director General for External Relations of the European Commission.

"If we really want to attack the global political problems, terrorism or economic development, it is necessary that the Maghreb succeeds integration (...) and we know that it is blocked in large part because of the dispute over the Sahara issue, said Landaburu, in an interview published by the "Europe Diplomatic Magazine" journal in its latest issue.

The European head said that the solution to global political problems, terrorism or economic development requires the Maghreb integration.

"The Maghreb should become true. Divided and separated countries are too small to carry out ambitious development," he said, stressing the need for the Maghreb to succeed regional integration and develop its infrastructure.

Mr. Landaburu also expressed the wish to see the countries of this region identify areas of cooperation and regional integration that have been so beneficial to Europe, highlighting the importance of partnership relations between the EU and the Maghreb countries .

"The relations with the Maghreb are good and we have reached a sufficient level of maturity (...) because we have reliable and solid partners in whom we trust," he said.

The European head has also emphasized the need for Europe to help the Maghreb countries to combat terrorism.

"We recognize that if we do not contribute to help the states against terror it will reach our own countries," he warned, adding that the best response to terrorism is to work on ground and provides opportunities for development.

In helping countries to develop a policy of economic and social development will not give people reasons to return to a certain nihilism and destruction rather than building, "he added.
