Moroccan press described as "failure" the efforts made by the Algerian diplomacy to gain African countries' support during the African Union Summit held in Banjul without tackling the Sahara issue.

"Al Ittihad Al Ichtiraki" says that several African countries have opposed the Algerian plan aiming to include a clause in the African Union Commission report calling for granting the Sahrawi people the right to self-determination.

Many African ministers of Foreign Affairs have underlined the recent progress Morocco has made with regard to the Sahara issue, which has been opposing, since 1976, Morocco to the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists who lay claims to Morocco's southern provinces, known as the Sahara. The former Spanish colony was retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accords.

The paper adds that the proposal made by Morocco (granting a large autonomy to the southern provinces) is winning African countries' support, as well as the support of the Sahrawi people, which stresses the importance of this proposal.

“Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb” underscores that the African Union Summit ended without tackling the Sahara issue. Neither the ministers of Foreign Affairs nor the African Heads of state could subscribe to the desires of the head of the Algerian diplomacy, Mohamed Bedjaoui.

“Al Mounaâtaf” writes that the Algerian government has used all means to win the African countries over to its side vis-à-vis the Sahara issue. However, after Morocco’s proposal to grant a large autonomy to the southern provinces, the Algerian choices seem irrelevant.
