The UNSG report of the Sahara clearly says it is up to Algeria and the separatists to show willingness to settle the dispute over the territory, affirming the Moroccan stance to seek a political solution - "to the tension maintained by Algeria in the region" - is appropriate, several Moroccan media said on Monday.

"Bayane Al Yaoum" daily said the report sets "clearly the ball in the camp of Algeria that support the +Polisario+ front", adding the document  reiterates "the impossibility to materialize the utopian goals of the separatists" stressing "the relevance of the Moroccan stand on finding a political, negotiated and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict that lasted too long".

The Sahara conflict was triggered in the mid-seventies when the "Polisario"  movement, backed by Algeria, claimed the separation of the southern provinces of Morocco, known as the Sahara, from the motherland as they were retrieved from Spanish rule under the Madrid accords.

In asking for the prolongation of the mandate of UN mission in the Sahara (MINURSO) to October, the daily said the UNSG gives Algeria and the separatists an opportunity to take a decisive stand in the interest of the two sisterly countries and their peoples and put an end to decades of  suffering.

"L'Opinion" daily says the report buries for good the Baker II Plan and rejects any « imposed solution » and favours direct negotiations between all the concerned parties as the sole move to help come out of the impasse.

The report « outstandingly moves the lines », says  "Aujourd'hui le Maroc", adding the direct negotiations option actually buries all the other plans and stressing “there wont be any new small state in the Maghreb”, for the issue now revolves around “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.”

"Assabah" daily says the report has upset the "separatists, who are threatening to resort anew to arms".

"Assahra Al Maghribya", said that the UNSG stand on the issue is in line with “the Moroccan approach”, for a solution cannot be imposed to this phoney dispute and the resolution of the issue has to be based on “political negotiation taking into account Moroccan sovereignty”.

"Attajdid" said there wont be any solution to the conflict unless there is agreement between Morocco and Algeria, stressing that to reach this outcome “there must be a change of attitude of Algeria that is against the Moroccan territorial integrity”.
