The Sahara "is not an issue of decolonization" and "has nothing to do with the right of peoples to self-determination," said Secretary-General of the Algerian Workers' Party, Louisa Hanoune, quoted Saturday by the Algerian daily "Le Jour d'Algérie".

Warning against foreign interference in the region, Mrs. Hanoune, called at a press conference, on Friday, following a meeting of the party central committee, for dialog between the parties concerned "starting with our country [Algeria]," to find a solution to the 32-year conflict between the north African country and the Algerian-backed separatists of Polisario who lay claims to Morocco's Southern Provinces. The former Spanish colony was ceded to Morocco in 1975 under the Madrid Accord signed with Spain and Mauritania.

Very committed to the Maghreb Union (regional grouping mustering Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia), the political leader had called for the reopening of land borders between Algeria and Morocco, following the kingdom's call, on March 20, for a "normalization of relations with Algeria, and for the opening of the borders between the two countries."

In the same vein, the Algerian National Liberation Front (French acronym FLN- ruling party) had expressed, last Sunday, support for the reopening of the land border between Morocco and Algeria.

“As a political party, we wish the reopening of the borders because there should be no borders between the Maghreb states and we yearn for the union of the Maghreb peoples,” said Saîd Bouhaja, the party member in charge of communication, in interview to the Algerian daily “Akhbar El Youm”.
