The proposal to grant broad autonomy to the Sahara region is a "great success" of the Moroccan diplomacy in its efforts to find a final settlement of this regional dispute, "said the president of the Mauritanian Party for Union and Change (PMUC), Mr. Saleh Ould Mohamed Ould Hanana.

M. Ould Hanana, who was speaking during an interview on Monday in Rabat with the President of National Rally of Independents (RNI), Mr. Mustapha Mansouri, bilieved that the region would not create a non-viable state, stressing that logic dictates that efforts should rather be directed towards the establishment of a regional grouping.

In this context, he wished that a solution could be found as quickly as possible to Sahara conflict, within the framework of resolutions 1754 and 1783 of the Security Council, thereby facilitating the construction of the Arab Maghreb Union .

During the meeting, Mauritanian leader referred to a training initiative to organize a forum for political parties in the Maghreb, which will serve as a platform for the exchange of experience and views on the various issues in the region, in light of the creation of a monitoring mechanism for action in this area.

For his part, Mr. Mansouri focused on the excellent relations existing between Morocco and Mauritania, stressing the need to diversify and strengthen them further.

He also called for the strengthening of links between political parties, parliamentarians, businessmen and citizens of the countries of the Maghreb region, with the aim of setting up an atmosphere that can cope with political crises.

Political actors from the Maghreb countries are increasingly asked to build such networks and direct decision makers to the region’s interests in a context marked by regional groupings and trade globalization“, RNI Chairman added.

On the other hand, Mr. Mansouri raised the issue of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, stressing that Morocco, after the failure of previous plans, proposed the autonomy initiative in an attempt to get the Sahara issue out of the deadlock.

He also mentioned the sufferings of the sequestered populations for more than thirty years in the Tindouf camps, in southwestern Algeria.
