The Maldives reiterated support for Morocco's autonomy proposal as a solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

"The Maldives has always supported Morocco's position on the Sahara and has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution of the dispute through negotiations," Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said on the occasion of the Ministerial Conference in Support of the Autonomy Initiative under Morocco's Sovereignty, held virtually on Friday at the invitation of the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America.

Maldives top diplomat also welcomed the recent decision of the United States to recognize the Sovereignty of the Kingdom over the entire Moroccan Sahara region.

Despite the geographical remoteness, cooperation between the Maldives and Morocco is as rich as diversified, ranging from the economy, culture, education, environmental protection to the fight against terrorism, he added.

Representing 40 countries, 27 of which were represented at the ministerial level, participants in the conference welcomed the development projects launched in the region, particularly within the framework of the "New Development Model for the Southern Provinces."
