Major Event

The return to Morocco of a hundred Sahrawis, who participated last December in Gjijimat congress near Tifariti, is a logical consequence of a long dissidence process within Polisario since its creation and glimmer of hope prompted by the Moroccan autonomy initiative among the sequestered people in the Tindouf camps.

This large-scale return of families, which reflects the malaise afflicting the camps is particularly important because it is run by Polisario officials and several sheikhs, a social group, which has an obvious influence on tribal members, as a wise men, mediators, regulators and depository of the memory of tribes.

Through this initiative, congressmen have taken enormous risks to denounce Polisario extremist attitude and openly support the Moroccan Initiative, which is a glimmer of hope for the populations sequestered in the Tindouf camps, against frustration feelings stemming from the rigid attitude of the separatists leaders.

These sheikhs and personalities, responding to the call «clement and merciful motherland", have in fact opted for the continuation, in dignity, from their country, of their struggle against the negative attitude of the Polisario, which blocks any attempt to resolve this conflict.

Sahrawis who have just returned to Morocco were encouraged by the Moroccan initiative that triggered reactions by large number of current dissidents who had chosen to remain silent and stay away. In fact, since the announcement of this initiative, voices begin to support the glimmer of hope that it presents, as a democratic and serious proposal which grants broad autonomy to the region and respects the population’s specificities.

The initiative, widely hailed by the international community, is essential since the region is threatened, at a daily basis, by terrorism, organized crime and separatist movements that threaten territorial integrity of a number of countries in the region.

The democratic nature of this initiative, contrasting with autocratic, rigid and outdated attitude by the separatists’ leaders demystifies the propaganda machine by Polisario and Algeria which has maintained, for more than thirty years, an illusion around a separatist project, allowing kidnapped people to initiate dissent and upheaval initiatives.

The vast majority of hostages are now aware that the solution to the Sahara issue is through voluntary return, at home, in Morocco, far from Algeria which is blocking a solution.

While expressing their reluctance towards the rhetoric of the Polisario, sequestered people are now convinced that the solution to the Sahara conflict can only be political, with a large autonomy, guaranteeing them all their rights under the Moroccan sovereignty.

This awareness has been reinforced by the serious, good faith and determination displayed by Morocco since negotiations began in Manhasset on the Sahara, under the aegis of the United Nations, unlike Polisario leaders who want to undermine these talks.
