Morocco is seeking a solution to the Sahara issue, which will serve not only the local population and Moroccans in the camps, but also the Maghreb integration and the normalization of relations with Algeria, as well as the security and stability of the region, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Taieb Fassi Fihri.

In an interview published Friday in "Al Ahdath Al Maghribia" daily, Mr. Fassi Fihri said he hoped to see Algeria and Polisario taking into account the change in the UN and the international community.

There is an agreement on the continuation of the negotiation process and "we will wait for the evaluation of the Kingdom of Morocco in April", the visit of the UN secretary-general personal envoy for the Sahara, Mr. Peter Van Walsum, and the report of UN Secretary-General, said Fassi Fihri, noting that Morocco is confident about the latter’s reports and proposals.

The negotiations, he added, will continue in the 4th round and will focus on two key points which are the implementation of the two UN resolutions 1754 and 1783 and the review of some issues relating to autonomy as has been the case in the 2nd round.

At the 3rd round of negotiations, Moroccan delegation officially approached institutions and regional powers scheduled in the context of the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco, "said Fassi Fihri.

The minister believe that international legitimacy and the Security Council resolutions as well as the pressures and positions of several influential countries or brothers are able to make Polisario accept the autonomy plan.

when asked about the Moroccan concerns to see the Manhasset process constituting a new crisis or becoming a routine, Mr. Fassi Fihri said this may be " the aim of the other parties", indicating that these negotiations are a new step, which occurs after the international community recommended from all parties to assume their responsibilities and initiatives .

Morocco has responded positively to this appeal, he said. These rounds of negotiations have enabled the Kingdom to explain, first, the importance of the Moroccan initiative, based on the resolutions of the Security Council and the important decision of the UN General Assembly, and then, shed light on the outline of the initiative.

Mr. Fassi said that the 3rd round was also an opportunity to directly discuss what Polisario represents to the majority of Saharans who have ben enjoying full political, economic and social citizenship since decades, as their ancestors, adding it was also an opportunity to present before the UN, some indicators on Moroccans sufferings in the camps, who are deprived of expression and movement rights.

Mr. Fassi Fihri also regretted unchanged position of Polisario and Algeria, during direct talks, which have not responded positively to the request by the international community and the resolutions of the Security Council.

Morocco has made "an important, courageous and historic step," said the minister, adding that the other side should do the same in order to reach a solution acceptable to all.

No alternative can be seen outside this consensual solution, he said, stressing that Morocco continues its regional development strategy in accordance with the guidelines contained in the royal speech in Agadir last year, in which the Sovereign paved the way for regionalization.
