The Sahara autonomy project proposed by Morocco is "a historic opportunity" to a way out of the Sahara deadlock, "said The Europe-based  "Special Committee in Charge of Moroccan Sahara" (CSCSM)

In an open letter addressed to the UN Security Council President, a copy of which was received Thursday by MAP, the CSCSME underlines that "by offering broad autonomy to the region, Morocco offers "a historic opportunity to a way out to the Sahara conflict."

This proposal was unanimously welcomed by the international community, considering it as a fair and achievable solution, "it adds.

After pointing out that Morocco commits itself, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in a modernization process of its institutions and economic, social and cultural development, the Committee says that the Kingdom is keen today to "consolidate this change especially to resolve the Sahara conflict in a peaceful way" which hinders the construction of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU).

Moreover, the CSCSME strongly denounces the holding last December 14-18, "Polisario" congress in Tifariti, which is located in a buffer zone under MINURSO control thus breaching ceasefire.

"This new act is a ploy to further derail the ongoing negotiating process and undermine the positive momentum generated by the Moroccan autonomy initiative and reinforced by the latest Security Council resolutions 1754 (2007) and 1783 (October 2007)” adds the same source.

"This mock congress constitutes for Sahrawi Moroccans a grave violation of cease-fire agreements, an act to maintain a representative myth that the separatist movement could not hold and a violation of human rights and international humanitarian law," according to the CSCSME.

The congress "defies the Security Council which, in paragraph 2 of its resolution 1783 called on parties to create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue and success of the ongoing negotiations," it says.

In this context, the Committee calls on the Security Council President to politically back the Moroccan initiative" now recognized by the international community as the only credible path for a final and peaceful solution to this conflict which has lasted too long "and strongly denounce Polisario actions and their allies who " defy international law and threaten peace and stability of the entire region".

The CSCSME also urged the UN responsible to work for the release of the sequestered populations in the Tindouf camps, on Algerian soil, and who need freedom and return to motherland, and support the ongoing peace process under UN auspices.
