Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, El Salvador's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ms. Egriselda Lopez, said her country encourages efforts to find a "peaceful, fair and lasting solution" to the conflict and supports "the ongoing political process led under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General", on the basis of the Security Council resolutions adopted since 2007, and in particular resolution 2468, which highlights the need to move towards a "realistic, practical and sustainable, political solution based on compromise".
The Salvadoran diplomat also said that the convening of two round tables in Geneva, with the participation of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario, may develop a spirit of cooperation in order to meet the many challenges facing the region.
She also welcomed the commitment of all parties to continue this process and to participate in a third round table on the Sahara issue.
