Major Event

The 10th international academic research seminar organized Monday by Morocco’s permanent mission to the United Nations, on the theme "Territorial autonomy as a means of conflict resolution", was marked by the call for "polisario" made by the renowned lawyer of Syiah Kuala University in Aceh, Indonesia, Professor Mawardi Ismail, to take inspiration from the case of the province of Aceh by renouncing the unrealistic option of independence and opting for autonomy.

Professor Mawardi presented to the participants the specificities of the case of Aceh, which was granted autonomous region status in 2005 under the Helsinki Agreement. The expert regretted that the "Movement for a Free Aceh" (GAM), a former armed rebel group, had rejected the autonomy proposal made by the Indonesian government several years earlier, before finally accepting it.

The expert drew a parallel between the issue of the Moroccan Sahara and the case of Aceh, noting the similarities between the two questions. He commended the flexible nature of the autonomy proposal, describing it as the only way to achieve a peaceful resolution to this conflict, within the framework of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

In this regard, he called on the "polisario" to be realistic and to stop insisting on the option of independence, which is strongly rejected by Morocco. Professor Mawardi also noted that the option of independence has no support from the international community.

The Indonesian expert also stressed that the peaceful resolution of the Aceh case could be set as a model, expressing the hope that it could inspire the resolution of the conflict in the Moroccan Sahara.
