The relevance of the Moroccan initiative to grant a broad autonomy to the Sahara region, described by the international community as a serious and credible solution, was highlighted, on Thursday in Geneva, at the 40th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which was also an opportunity to thwart the false and hostile allegations to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

A group of twenty states supporting the territorial integrity of the Kingdom stressed the fundamental importance of the autonomy initiative put on the table by Morocco, noting that this solution has been recognized by the UNSC as the unique and exclusive way leading to the settlement of this regional dispute, for which Algeria bears responsibility because of its financial, diplomatic and military support for the polisario's separatists. In a statement on their behalf, read out by Morocco's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber, these countries welcomed the Kingdom's constructive and voluntary interaction with the UNHRC. They also underlined the call made by HM King Mohammed VI to establish a joint political mechanism for dialogue and consultation with Algeria to overcome current disputes and lay the bases for relations of trust, solidarity and good neighborliness between the two countries. In response to a hostile statement made by the opponents of the Kingdom's territorial integrity, Zniber blasted over the abusive, deceptive and outrageous nature of a statement by Algeria and South Africa, supported by countries such as Venezuela, Zimbabwe and Nicaragua, all of which are known for perpetrating human rights violations. The Moroccan diplomat insisted that all these countries are strongly criticized by the Council, a fact that removes their right to any legitimacy to try to undermine Morocco, which is immunized against such attempts by having solid references in human rights.
