The Spanish Green Party (Los Verdes) called for a peaceful and negotiated solution to the Sahara issue, "without winner or loser."


In a recommendation adopted at the end of the works of 13th Congress held last weekend in Gandia in the Valencia region (eastern Spain), the Green Party called for a peaceful solution to the Sahara issue, taking into account the interests of citizens.

  At the Congress, to which were invited representatives of several political parties including the Authenticity and Modernity Party(PAM), represented by the Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Ilias El Omari, Spanish Greens also criticized the "Spanish colonial policy "in the Sahara issue.

In another resolution on cultural, historical and linguistic rights, the Spanish Greens called for recognition by the Spanish state of Amazigh language and its establishment as official language in Ceuta and Melilla and its adoption in administrations and media as well as in elementary and secondary schools.

Speaking at the congress, Mr. Ilias El Omari focused particularly on the negative consequences of the Spanish occupation north and south of the Kingdom of Morocco.

  He mentioned, in this regard, the use by the Spanish occupier of chemical weapons banned under 1925Geneva Convention, against Rif people

PAM Representative further stressed that Morocco and Spain guarantee security in the Mediterranean region, calling for a just and agreed solution by all parties to the Sahara issue, which is likely to promote the prosperity and development in this area and able to protect the region from terrorism.
At the Congress, marked by the adoption of other resolutions, one on the environment was attended also by PLO representatives, Palestinian Democratic Front and the Moroccan Green Party, Joan Francesc Peris, was elected new leader of the Green Party in Spain.
