The Government of Panama reiterated Thursday in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on the sidelines of the 43rd Summit of SICA its strong position regarding the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara despite the government change planned July 1st.


Panama’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mayra Arosemena, whose country had officially suspended last November recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Republic, considering that the entity does not meet requirements of a state under the international law, renewed this stance in a meeting with Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Salaheddine Mezouar.

The Moroccan official met Arosemena, in the presence of designate-foreign minister Luis Miguel Hincapie, in Punta Cana where he is taking part in a summit of the Central American integration system.

The upcoming foreign minister of Panama, who will take office on July 1st, said the suspension of the Sahrawi Republic recognition is irreversible on the basis of international legality and historic realities, recalling that his country supports a political settlement to the conflict and is endeavoring to consolidate its political, cultural and economic relations with Morocco.

For its part, Mezouar praised the consistent position of Panama vis-à-vis the artificial conflict created around the Moroccan Sahara, while stressing that Morocco "is proud" to have established diplomatic relations with Panama and sucks to reach the level of a strategic global and exemplary South-South partnership. 

Moroccan minister was also satisfied with the quality of the ongoing political dialogue between the two countries, expressing the wish that these consultations will further strengthen, through the establishment of relationships strong and diversified economic and trade cooperation, given that Morocco is present today in Latin America as an observer member of the Central American integration System (SICA). 

Mezouar also met with his Honduran counterpart Mireya Aguero means able to strengthen relations between the two countries. The minister expressed on this occasion Morocco's desire to raise these relationships at the highest level. In this context, he announced that Mr. Aguero will visit the Kingdom in September. 

In a statement to MAP at the end of this meeting, Ms. Aguero found that the designation of Morocco as an observer to the Sica is a "historic event" for the regional grouping in relation to the common ties between the Kingdom and Central American and "respect and consideration that we dedicate to Morocco" countries. She said in this regard that projects between his country and the United Kingdom will emerge soon. 

Sica, which includes Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize and the Dominican Republic, aimed at achieving economic complementarity between the countries in the grouping for Central America become a region where prevailing peace, freedom, democracy and development.
