American civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson praised on Saturday Morocco’s reforms and major achievements in development.

After paying tribute to the Kingdom’s millenary history and democratic record, the champion of Afro-Americans rights praised in a meeting with the Wali of the Oued Eddahab-Lagouira region, Hamid Chabar, elected officials and local activists the adoption of a constitution and major reforms.

Currently visiting Dakhla as part of a trip to Morocco, Reverend Jackson, one of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures also evoked progress made in human rights, before calling for keeping the course in this field.
On the Sahara issue, he considered that Morocco’s decision to submit to the UN an autonomy plan for the Sahara is “judicious”.

For his part, the Wali of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira, explained the developments of the Sahara issue and the reforms undertaken by Morocco, especially in the southern provinces, particularly in the region of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira.

He also highlighted the efforts made by Morocco and its willingness to find a final and consensual solution to the artificial problem around the Sahara, as well as his bold autonomy proposal, considered by the UN as a realistic solution and received broad support from the international community.

The Wali said in this context that the African continent does not support the creation of new entities, but rather would need more unity and solidarity.

Elected officials welcomed the visit of Rev. Jackson, under the distinguished relations between Morocco and the United States.

They reiterated their pride in the Moroccan Sahara and the support of the inhabitants of the Sahara to the proposal of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty in order to find a lasting solution to the conflict that has lasted too long.

In this context, the Council’s chairman of the region of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira Mami Boucif, said that the world is moving towards unity and cooperation to ensure full prosperity to the people for a decent life. But some persist "to go against the current." He mentioned, in this context, Algeria which, by hosting and funding the Tindouf camps, aims to perpetuate the artificial problem of the Sahara.

Moroccan Sahrawis chose unity and integration, he assured, expressing the hope that the Sahara issue will be settled to focus on the development of the region.

Reverend Jackson will perform Sunday field trips to learn about various aspects of development in the region. Saturday, he visited the Sahrawi library and museum in Dakhla.
