The British government welcomed Thursday Morocco’s political will to strengthen human rights in the Sahara.

"Morocco has demonstrated its political will to improve human rights" in the Sahara, said Baroness Warsi, Minister of Foreign Office, during a debate on Morocco at the House of Lords (upper house of UK parliament).

Stressing the positive role of Morocco to settle the Sahara issue, the official mentioned the visit to Morocco in September 2012 by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez, who reaffirmed the emergence of a culture of human rights in the southern provinces and highlighted the political will of Morocco to improve the situation of human rights in these provinces.

Baroness Warsi added that the UK remains committed to a political solution to the Sahara issue that is acceptable to all parties to the conflict.
