Autonomy proposal is the only solution and the most appropriate option to end the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, said Sunday in Laayoune elected officials from the region of Laayoune-Boujdour-Saqiat el Hamra in a meeting with a delegation from the Socialist and Democratic Group at the European Parliament.

On this occasion, the Council Chairman of the Laayoune region, Hamdi Ould Sidi Errachid, stressed that the autonomy initiative is intended as a general realistic and achievable project ensuring local people a dignified life and allowing them to manage their affairs themselves.

This initiative, he said, comes from a deep conviction of Saharawis reflecting their strong attachment to the glorious Alawite throne and the pact of allegiance that binds them to the Sovereign for years.

Ould Errachid added that political parties, politicians, notables of the Sahrawi tribes are unanimous over the Moroccan Sahara and Morocco’s territorial integrity.

For his part, the president of the municipal council of the city of Laayoune, Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid said that "the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty emanates from a deep conviction of the Saharawi people, who have contributed to its development through the Royal Advisory Council for Saharan Affairs or as Sahrawi tribes and elected sheikhs"

Autonomy in the southern provinces allows Sahrawi local populations sequestered in Tindouf camps to live in peace and in a climate of stability and peace, he said, adding that the major projects carried out in this part of the Kingdom, particularly in infrastructure, health, education and development, provide tangible evidence of the commitment of the Kingdom to the process of progress and democracy building.

European parliamentary delegation also attended presentations on projects in the city of Laayoune as well as other completed or underway projects in other southern provinces of the Kingdom.

Led by Véronique de Keyser, the delegation held Friday in Laayoune, a meeting with the Wali of the region Khalil Dkhil and held on Saturday a series of meetings with civil society in addition to a visit to MINURSO headquarters.
