On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the Leadership Council for Human Rights (LCHR) and Teach the Children International (TCI) launched on Thursday a call to the international community about the plight of populations sequestered in camps Tindouf in southwestern Algeria, and drew attention to the suffering endured by the Sahrawi activist Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud.

"We would like once again to denounce the situation in the camps of Tindouf, where Polisario militias are rampant, and the ordeal endured by Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud, who began a hunger strike for more than one month to claim a fundamental right, the right to be with his family he was deprived of by the separatist leaders, emphasize Kathryn Cameron Porter, President of LCHR and Nancy Huff, President of TCI, in a joint statement.

Mustapha Salma, "a former head of Polisario police had been kidnapped, held in secret and tortured by Polisario for his adherence to a peaceful settlement of the Sahara issue based on the Moroccan autonomy plan" , they said.

Since May 20, the Saharawi activist is on a open hunger strike before the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Nouakchott to demand the regularization of the situation, including the right to join his family and have a passport. He was rushed to hospital last Tuesday, following the deterioration of his health.

"As humanitarians, we urge the international community, UNHCR, the Red Cross and all human rights organizations to support the case of Mustapha to save his life as a refugee and all other refugees who have no voice in the world. This day is not a day to celebrate, but a day to commemorate the values of freedom and human dignity, " concluded LCHR and TCI statement.
