Australia expressed its support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution by parties involved in the Sahara conflict.

This position was expressed in a joint statement following visit by Saad El Dine Otmani in Canberra the first of its kind by a Moroccan minister of foreign affairs in Australia, which follows the one paid in the Kingdom, in June 2012, by Senator Bob Carr, first chief of the Australian diplomacy to go to Morocco.

According to the statement, the Australian Foreign Minister, Senator Bob Carr said that "Australia supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a just, lasting political solution accepted by the parties, in accordance with Resolution 2099 of the Security Council (April 25, 2013), which praised Morocco's efforts in this regard. "

The joint statement added that Australia "has stressed the importance of improving human rights in the Sahara, while recognizing the steps taken by Morocco in this direction."

The joint statement noted the satisfaction of both parties for their cooperation within the United Nations and the role of the two countries as members of the Security Council for the establishment of peace and international security, stressing deep challenges threatening stability in the world, such as the Syrian crisis, spread of terrorism in the Sahel and its impact on the whole region.
