The Panamanian government welcomed Wednesday the proposal of autonomy for the southern provinces by Morocco to reach a settlement of the conflict over the Sahara, saying that the initiative "should be approached with an open mind, pragmatism and realism".

In a statement, the Panamanian Foreign Ministry invited the parties to the conflict "to show political will and good faith in order to reach mutually acceptable agreements."

Panama also considers that the dispute over the Sahara is "an urgent demand by the international community because the unstable situation in the Sahel region is a threat to neighboring countries and jeopardizes the future of their citizens welfare ".

The Panamanian government has expressed its support for the decision of the Security Council of the United Nations to extend, until April 2014, the mandate of MINURSO, and supported the negotiation process led by Christopher Ross, personal envoy of the UN Secretary General.

The Panamanian Foreign Minister, Fernando Nunez Fabrega, told the "La Estrella" that his country supports the process of negotiations on the Sahara under the auspices of the United Nations in respect of the territorial integrity of Morocco.

"It is in the interests of the countries involved in the conflict that peace prevails in this volatile region" and for negotiations to resolve the conflict, said Mr. Nunez Fabrega, adding that Panama "examines the possibility to establish a troika with Colombia and Costa Rica for a unified position on this issue ".

The Sahara conflict called "Western Sahara" is an artificial conflict imposed to Morocco by Algeria. Polisario separatist movement supported by the Algerian government claims the creation of an artificial state in the Maghreb.

This  situation blocks all efforts of the international community for a solution to the conflict based on an advanced autonomy within Moroccan sovereignty and regional economic and security integration.
