The autonomy plan for the Sahara, proposed by Morocco, is "a good basis for discussions," said Friday MEP Neyts-Uyttebroeck, who "deplores" the Polisario and Algeria do not accept this plan as a basis for negotiation.

"This plan is a good basis for discussion, and I regret that the Polisario and Algeria, which is the main support to Polisario, do not accept this plan as a basis for negotiation," she said in a statement to MAP on the sidelines of a conference at the European Parliament on the situation of women in the Sahrawi camps in Tindouf.

"This is an excellent starting point, and those who refuse preparatory discussions on that basis, I can only conclude that they do not want a peaceful solution to this conflict," said Neyts, coordinator of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) within the Commission of Foreign Affairs at the European Parliament.

She also expressed support for Sahrawi women sequestered in Tindouf camps, noting that the purpose of the conference at the European Parliament was to give voice to these women, to draw attention to their plight.
