 The members of the UN Security Council unanimously stressed the "urgent need for a solution" to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, said Wednesday in New York, Morocco's ambassador to the UN, Mohamed Loulichki.
Most delegations were unanimous in stressing the urgency of this issue, citing the high cost of non-integration, the need to build the Maghreb Union and the extremely alarming situation in the region Sahel as the main reasons behind it, the ambassador told the press following closed consultations on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

The Personal Envoy of the Secretary General of the UN, Christopher Ross, and the Special Representative and Head of MINURSO, Wolfgang Weisbrod-Weber, briefed on Wednesday the fifteen members of the Council on the latest developments of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
This oral report, which comes after Ross’ tour in the region, is part of the UNSC resolution 2044 (April 2012), he recalled.
The Member States stressed the need for the countries of the region to mobilize their resources towards socio-economic and cultural development of their respective countries.
"It has been shown by several international financial institutions that the five Maghreb countries annually lose between 2-3 pc growth rate due to the closed borders policy and the absence of inter-Maghreban trade," said Ambassador.
According to the Moroccan diplomat, a solution will be a response to "the legitimate aspirations of the peoples of the Maghreb for economic integration and a joint effort to build a common future.
A quick solution to this conflict is all the more urgent due to the extremely alarming situation in the "south of the Maghreb and the deterioration of the Malian crisis, he added.
The Moroccan diplomat said "we are all set to face our responsibility to these challenges and the fact that the Security Council is itself involved, via the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to implement a plan to save northern Mali, is indicative of this urgency. "
