Washington reaffirmed in the joint statement of the first Strategic Dialogue between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, its support to the Moroccan autonomy initiative for the Sahara, which is "a potential approach likely to meet the aspirations of the people in the Sahara."


The statement which was published on October 15 states that "The United States of America continues to support efforts to find a peaceful, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Sahara issue," adding that "the US policy towards the Sahara has remained constant for several years. "

The release quoting Hillary Rodham Clinton, who signed the joint statement with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Morocco, Dr Saad El Dine Otmani that "the United States of America made it clear that Morocco’s autonomy plan is serious, realistic and credible. "

She adds, "it represents a potential approach that could meet the aspirations of the people of the Sahara to manage their own affairs in peace and dignity", concluding "we continue to support negotiations at the United Nations and urge Parties to work to resolve the dispute. "

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation accompanied by a large delegation of senior Moroccan officials paid a visit to Washington, September 13, 2012, for the holding of the first session of the Strategic Dialogue between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Morocco.
