Increasingly close ties between the terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and "Polisario" are a threat to the Sahel and Maghreb countries, warns a report by the U.S. think tank, Atlantic Council, and the Soufan Group, which specializes in international strategic issues.

"Last October, three Western aid workers were kidnapped, with the complicity of separatist sympathizers in the heart of the Tindouf camps (southern Algeria), which are under the control of Polisario militia," said this report entitled: "Islamic extremism mortgages renaissance of Africa."

This Kidnapping surprised nobody, says the report, explaining that the Tindouf camps where frustrated and unemployed youths have become easy prey for terrorist recruiters, seeking to carry out kidnapping acts for ransom, drug trafficking and other criminal activities.

"The situation in North Africa is even more serious in the sense that AQIM has benefitted from circumstances of the fall of Gaddafi enjoying the flow of arms and militants who had fought alongside the forces loyal to the former regime, "says the document. "With this new situation, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has been conducting operations against Mauritania, Mali and Niger," adds the same source.
