The EU-Morocco Friendship Group at the European Parliament (EP) "supports" the decision by the Kingdom to withdraw confidence in the personal envoy of UN Secretary General for the Sahara, Christopher Ross, said Wednesday in Brussels, its president Gilles Pargneaux.

"We support the legitimate position of Morocco concerning Christopher Ross to indicate that indeed there was a distrust" Given the excesses noted in his latest report on the Sahara," said Mr. Pargneaux, during a meeting of the President House of Representatives, Karim Ghellab, with the the EU-Morocco Friendship Group at the EP.

In addition, Mr. Pargneaux expressed the conviction by the Friendship Group that "the Moroccan autonomy plan in the Sahara is the best solution to this conflict, because it will not only secure the Sahara, but also the entire the Sahel region, which is currently experiencing many problems”.

Similarly, the Moroccan proposal to grant autonomy to the Sahara is likely to promote economic development in the Kingdom’s southern provinces, a fact that "I witnessed myself recently in Laayoune, in favour of the efforts made by Morocco and through a partnership between the Kingdom and the EU," the MEP added.

In this context, Mr. Pargneaux highlighted the importance to "defend the Moroccan autonomy plan in the Sahara at the European Parliament" because, he explained, "the Moroccan position is right, not only for reasons related to human rights, but also for reasons related to the economic and social development that will be beneficial to all residents of the Kingdom’s southern provinces".

Morocco has recently decided to withdraw its confidence in the personal envoy of UN Secretary General for the Sahara and asked to reform the process of resolving this issue. It criticized the "unbalanced" and "biased" position by Christopher Ross and called the UN secretary general to take appropriate decisions to advance the process of negotiations on the Sahara issue, while reiterating its commitment to the Security Council resolutions, and negotiations to reach a political solution, sustainable and consensual solution.
