The withdrawal by Morocco of its confidence in the UN personal envoy, Christopher Ross, is "a sovereign decision," said the London-based electronic newspaper Elaph.

In an opinion column published by the Arabic-speaking language journal, the author believes that "Morocco, by withdrawing confidence in Ross, was merely exercising a sovereign right in relations with officials appointed by the international organization, as part of its search for a consensual political solution" to the artificial conflict over the Kingdom’s integrity.

The paper adds that "the Moroccan decision came after Ross’s blatant bias in his handling of the Sahara issue, especially his attempts to hinder MINURSO work."

Elaph says in this regard that Morocco could not let perpetuate a situation that could have been a dangerous model.

The electronic journal indicates that the UN itself believed in the impossibility of organizing a referendum in the southern provinces of Morocco, recognizing the relevance of the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco to settle the Sahara case.

This initiative, the newspaper concluded, which was described by the international community as serious and credible, must constitute the sole basis for any effort that seeks to find a political solution to reduce all the factors of tension and give a boost to  the integration process in the Maghreb region.
