A report released Thursday in Washington, said that the Sahara conflict opens the door for the expansion of activities of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), in the Maghreb and Sahel regions, citing the recent AQIM operations, namely the kidnapping of three European humanitarian workers inside Polisario camps in Tindouf.

The report entitled, "Terrorism in North and West Africa: from September 11 to the Arab Spring", says that the Tindouf camps, under the control of the Polisario have become "fertile ground for recruitment by terrorist, smuggling and organized crime networks ", making their closure, the report says," a priority. "

Yonah Alexander is director of the Center for Terrorism Studies

In this regard, reports of intelligence agencies and the series of kidnappings last year confirmed, the strong links between AQIM and criminal organizations in Latin America, as part of drug trafficking to Europe through the Sahel region, with the complicity of members of the Polisario Front.

The author of this report, Yonah Alexander, Director of International Studies on Terrorism, which depends on the Potomac Institute, insisted that the AQIM threat, should encourage the international community "to put at the head of its priority transfer of camp residents in accordance with specific protocols and international conventions."

During a previous trip to Dakhla, Mr. Alexander had witnessed that those who flee the Tindouf camps, enjoy the progress experienced by the southern provinces. He said in this connection that this is an "inalienable human right".

It is worth mentioning that this report was presented at a conference held at the National Press Club in Washington, entitled "International cooperation against Terrorism". We called on this occasion, to final settlement of the Sahara issue, which is "an impediment to security in the region and the establishment of a real economic cooperation in the Maghreb and the Sahel region."
