The proposal was rejected without being put to vote by the majority parties which considered that the initiative does in no way contribute to resolving the Sahara issue, particularly at a time when Morocco is making important democratic rpogress welcomed by the international community, Moroccan diplomatic sources said.
The majority parties also pointed out that the resolution in question runs counter to the process initiated by the United Nations towards finding a just and lasting political solution to the issue, the sources said.
During the discussion, the representative of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the official position of his government that supports the work of the UN Personal Envoy of the Secretary General, adding that "this draft resolution would only hinder the constructive role that Belgium could play for the settlement of this matter. "
Several Belgian senators, from left and right, have described this project as "clearly biased, built on ideological grounds, and would therefore have no chance to pass, if by chance it is presented a second time," adds the same source.
