Morocco, which presented an autonomy plan to settle the Sahara issue under its sovereignty, was reinforced in its position following the recent developments in the North African region, says the British think-tank the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

"Morocco has gained confidence in its position, offering an autonomy and decentralization plan for the Sahara," the EIU said in its monthly report for October about Morocco.

This position has been strengthened by recent developments in the region, including the collapse of the former Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, who was one of the main mentors of the separatist movement Polisario, the source added.

The think-tank said that the National Transitional Council (CNT) in Libya expressed support for the Moroccan position, stressing that "the future of the Sahara can only be under Moroccan sovereignty."
