Polisario recruits fighters in the Tindouf camps (Algeria's south-west) and sends them to Libya in order to frustrate the uprising, said founder of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute on Religion and Public Policy, Joseph Grieboski.

Polisario has been pressing the Tindouf camps' population "into service as mercenaries to support Moammar Gadhafi's regime in Libya," said Grieboski in an interview with the U.S. paper "The Times Tribune".

He also called for ending the "horrible" human rights abuses in the camps and settling the Sahara conflict.

Recently, a former Libyan official said, as quoted by The Washington Post, that hundreds of mercenaries from polisario front have been recruited by Gaddafi’s regime to thwart the Libyan revolution.

"Details of a deal to recruit 450 fighters from the polisario have been passed to Nato officials by a former Gaddafi loyalist who was involved in the negotiations," the paper notes.

According to the same source, "the mercenaries are being paid $10,000 each to fight for Col Gaddafi for two months," adding that "the deal with the mercenaries was arranged last month after serious anti-government protests threatened to overthrow the regime."
