The International Action for peace and development in the Great Lakes region (AIPD) denounced human rights violations in the Tindouf camps (Algeria's south-west) and called on the African community to exert pressure towards ensuring "freedom of speech and movement for the Tindouf population."

"African civil society follows closely the developments of the Sahara issue. Human rights are violated in Tindouf. The last well-known case is that of Moustapha Ould Selma's arrest by the polisario for expressing his support to Morocco's autonomy plan," said the president of the African NGO Maurice Katala, as quoted by the news website of "Africaguinee".

Katala also urged all people of goodwill to contribute to solving the Sahara conflict, which hampers the integration efforts in Africa.

"We take this opportunity to urge for ensuring freedom of expression and movement for the population in Tindouf in order to facilitate the implementation of the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco to the Sahara," he added.

“Our commitment is not partisan, but only a united Africa that can meet the new challenges of the continent’s development,” said Katala speaking on behalf of his NGO as part of a report on freedom expression in areas of conflict.
