The autonomy initiative, which was welcomed by the international community, is the only way out of the conflict, Moran told MAP on the sidelines of a conference on the Sahara held in Vitoria (northern Spain) on February4-5.

In this respect, Moran, also member of the Spanish Think tank "Carta Meditérranea", recalled that the international community described as “feasible” the autonomy initiative which will shield the region from the creation of a mini-state dominated by the polisario.

He called on the polisario to present “concrete proposals” taking into account the prospects offered by the autonomy initiative.

On the Maghreb, the Spanish political leader deplored that the Moroccan-Algerian borders continue to be closed, thus “hampering progress towards a Sahara issue settlement as well as the Maghreb integration.”

A Maghreb Union would be a strong interlocutor for the EU, Moran added.
