Major Event

Members of the Moroccan civil society currently taking part in the 11th World Social Forum foiled, on Sunday, manoeuvres and provocation attempts by a handful of separatists backed by Spanish participants during the event's opening march.

Members of the Moroccan community in Senegal in addition to 800 civil society activists taking part in the Forum marched in the streets of Dakar waving the Kingdom’s flags and chanting the national anthem when some separatists, backed as usual by Spanish participants, tried desperately to violate the charter of the anti-capitalist event by raising slogans hostile to Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The Moroccan participants from different NGOs, unions and associations, managed, thanks to their strong presence, to put an end to the separatists’ provocations stunning them into silence.

Some Senegalese were also appalled by the hostile attitude of separatists, who tried in vain to use the Forum to serve their propaganda ends.

The forum, which runs until February 11, defines itself as a platform for those "opposed to neoliberalism and a world dominated by capital or any form of imperialism."

The annual World Social Forum was founded in 2001 as an alternative to the business-oriented World Economic Forum.
